This cyclone caused many disasters, floods and took away a lot of things but it also brought something back, tons of plastic and styrofoam refuse that covered the coasts and streets with a layer of white pollution that included 20 year old bottles. The natural disaster revealed a man-made disaster.This event talks to us not only about our damaging influence on nature but also about the eternal return of existence. The past came back to us, and the excessive industrial production that was once seen as the gateway to the future returned to remind us that the past is never over and that the future is always the uncertain return of our past intemperance. As one environmental worker put it “The way we treat the sea will pounce back on us eventually”, this might as well be: the way we act and behave, will leap back on us eventually. This cyclical vision of time might seem to contradict our usual perception of it as a linear succession of events, with one event being the cause of the next in an unbreakable chain of cause and effect, where the past is over as soon the future becomes the present. But as many thinkers have expressed and science has proved several times over, our perception of time as a line coming from the past and stretching away into the future is a cognitive illusion and not a feature of the universe. The construction of time is the hallmark of human consciousness, a useful way to understand our experience in the world, and it should be understood as a social construction that changes with time and geographical location. Online, offline, London, Berlin, Hong Kong and more! The Concept Once again people from all over the world are pouring into the streets to demand better and more dignified ways of living. As we stand at the crossroads once more, we have to ask about the role of art and its power to help social causes and bring about change.The question is broad and more complicated than it seems to be. It is not only about questioning the power of art, but about exploring how art can change things on a social level. Or in short, it is an exploration of the relationship between art and activism, from its more open and clamorous forms to its more subtle and indistinctive ways.Art as activism is not a new idea, artists and cultural workers have for long taken upon themselves to use artistic expression as a way to bring awareness and effect change. There have been great works of art addressing important issues: social &amp; racial inequality, domestic and international injustice, discrimination, economic imbalance, etc. The level of success varies widely, while many artists have given shape and visibility to previously hidden problems and their underlying structures, some have had success that is usually confined to the art circle, where their work is admired and respected but without a lasting impact in the world as large.For this project, we are exploring what the role of art is in changing social attitudes and structures, and what you can add to this moment as an artist. Our title ‘Wake Up and Smell the Tear Gas’ refers to a necessary moment of reflection where we can be honest about our previous attempts to change things and the ways in which we can try again. We are asking for honesty and compassion, an awareness of what is happening around the world right now and our responsibility as artists to keep on trying to alleviate the struggles of other human beings. Thus we are not asking for grand plans to change society but rather for new propositions and experimental ideas and how an artist can be an agent in the real world, or simply questioning, exploring and challenging the notion and general perception of art and activism, what they mean. Programme OverviewInspired, rather than restricted, by the Covid-19 situation around the world, “Wake Up &amp; Smell the Tear Gas” will take a different direction and shape to our previous projects. While there are uncertainties around the looming of second waves, YBI reflects on our role as a cultural organisation and our social responsibility. We believe it is not ideal to create occasions for big crowds regardless of when the second wave would arrive. We see this as an opportunity to turn inwards and focus on artist development, foster a stronger artist community despite the physical distances among us.Besides, many of us have started developing a habit of connecting with each other digitally since the lockdown. Rather than creating a communication barrier with those close to us, we are using this opportunity and new habit to shorten the distances among artists in different countries and continents. Creating occasions for exchanges, discussions, collaborations with those who are usually too far away for us to work with. The exhibition frames the works as a dialogue between the experiences of Korean women subjected to military sexual slavery during the Japanese invasion between 1930-1945 (also known as “comfort women”) and the current experience of Ukrainian women as they continue to resist the invasion of their country. The word "숨(Suum)" is a Korean term that means to breathe or to give life. The title Breath. Дихання. Suum. is made up of ‘breath’ in English or Latvian, Korean and Ukrainian, it symbolises the fading breaths of the surviving comfort women and the stories of Ukrainian women who have left their country in search of a place where they can breathe freely. Where there is breath, there is hope. “I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own” - Audre LordeBreath. Дихання. Suum. captures and reflects the trauma and pain, hopes and dreams, struggles and determination, despair and optimism of 11 women through portraits and audio recording. Since 2022, a big number of women from Ukraine have lived through parts of the Russian invasion in their homeland and found refuge all over the world, some called Latvia their new home. Some are fresh graduates, some are mothers or professionals. There were plans and dreams of exploring the world with their loved ones, some were climbing their career ladders. They were enjoying their simple daily lives. But as bombs landed, all that vanished. Life is about survival, being alive is a blessing when the biggest conflict in Europe since World War II erupted. Before and during World War II, on the other side of the world, the term ‘comfort women’ surfaced. These women were the victims of a military sexual slavery system established, operated and expanded by the Japanese Imperial Armed Forces from the 1930s until the end of WWII. It highlights the fact that the female bodies are often targeted and used as a weapon in armed conflicts. The word ‘comfort’ is misleading as it disguises the darkness and inhumanity of repeated violence and rape. This issue is often a trigger of political conflicts between Japan and Korea. To date, the victims have not received an official apology, there are only a small number of surviving women left who are still fighting for justice. Europe or Asia, early 20th century or 21st, young or old, they not only have the traumatic life experiences in common, but also in their strive for justice, freedom and peace as well as their spirit to keep fighting. Andrejs Strokins Andrejs Strokins (b. 1984) is a Latvian photographer, living and working in Riga. He works with documentary photography projects&nbsp; as well as with vernacular images and found archives. In addition to pursuing his personal projects, Strokins works as a freelance photographer, mostly working with reportage and portraiture and editorial assignments. Yajima Tsukasa Born in Takasaki, Japan, Yajima studied history at Waseda University and photography at the Nippon Institute of Photography in Tokyo. From 2003 to 2006, he lived in the House of Sharing in South Korea, a home for Korean women who survived the ordeal of the ‚comfort women‘ system and worked on the „Face to Face“ photography project. His photographic works have been exhibited in Germany, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. In the framework of a duo exhibition between Korea-based artist Yajima Tsukasa and Latvian artist Andrejs Strokins, 10 large scale photographic portraits of surviving Korean comfort women as well as Ukrainian women who experienced the ongoing war will be exhibited alongside voice recordings. The intimate body of works tells of their personal and, at times, traumatic life experiences that draw a parallel in time - early 20th and 21st century, and space - East Asia and Europe, while reflecting the same plight that affects women still 80 years on. The exhibition intends to not only show the women as victims of wars, but individuals with their own names and identities. For this project, Strokins has created fresh portraits of Ukrainian women who currently reside in Latvia. To contrast time and space, his selection of photographs are in colour. The portraits were taken at locations in Riga where the Ukrainian women felt connected to. Being displaced just over the past couple of years, most of them felt disoriented, the idea of home became a distant concept. This, the sense of melancholy, will and hope were encapsulated in Strokins’s emotional works. To rightly express the women’s stories and emotions in the photos, private conversations with them were held to talk about their experience in Ukraine, the journey to Latvia, their hopes, dreams and trauma with the presence of a translator a couple of months before the portraits were taken. Depuis 2022, un grand nombre de femmes ukrainiennes ont vécu l’invasion russe dans leur pays et ont trouvé refuge partout dans le monde, certaines ont fait de la Lettonie leur nouveau foyer. Certaines sont de jeunes diplômées, d’autres des mères ou des professionnelles. Elles avaient des projets et des rêves de découvrir le monde avec leurs proches, certaines gravissaient les échelons de leur carrière. Elles profitaient de leur vie quotidienne simple. Mais lorsque les bombes sont tombées, tout cela a disparu. La vie est devenue une question de survie, être en vie est une bénédiction lorsque le plus grand conflit en Europe depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale éclate. Avant et pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, de l’autre côté du monde, le terme « femmes de réconfort » est apparu. Ces femmes étaient les victimes d’un système d’esclavage sexuel militaire établi, opéré et étendu par les forces armées impériales japonaises des années 1930 jusqu’à la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Cela met en lumière le fait que les corps des femmes sont souvent ciblés et utilisés comme armes dans les conflits armés. Le mot « réconfort » est trompeur car il masque l’obscurité et l’inhumanité de la violence et des viols répétés. Cette question est souvent un déclencheur de conflits politiques entre le Japon et la Corée. À ce jour, les victimes n’ont pas reçu d’excuses officielles, seules quelques survivantes continuent de lutter pour la justice. Europe ou Asie, début du XXe siècle ou XXIe, jeunes ou âgées, elles partagent non seulement des expériences de vie traumatisantes, mais aussi la quête de justice, de liberté et de paix, ainsi que l’esprit de continuer à se battre. Andrejs Strokins Andrejs Strokins (né en 1984) est un photographe letton, vivant et travaillant à Riga. Il travaille sur des projets de photographie documentaire ainsi qu’avec des images vernaculaires et des archives trouvées. En plus de ses projets personnels, Strokins travaille comme photographe indépendant, principalement dans le reportage, le portrait et les missions éditoriales. Yajima Tsukasa Né à Takasaki, Japon, Yajima a étudié l’histoire à l’Université Waseda et la photographie à l’Institut Nippon de Photographie à Tokyo. De 2003 à 2006, il a vécu à la Maison du Partage en Corée du Sud, un foyer pour les femmes coréennes ayant survécu au système des « femmes de réconfort », et a travaillé sur le projet photographique « Face to Face ». Ses œuvres photographiques ont été exposées en Allemagne, au Japon, en Corée du Sud et à Taïwan. Dans le cadre d’une exposition en duo entre l’artiste basée en Corée Yajima Tsukasa et l’artiste letton Andrejs Strokins, 10 portraits photographiques grand format de survivantes coréennes et de femmes ukrainiennes ayant vécu la guerre en cours seront exposés, accompagnés d’enregistrements vocaux. Ce corpus intime raconte leurs expériences personnelles, parfois traumatisantes, qui font écho à travers le temps - début du XXe et XXIe siècle - et l’espace - Asie de l’Est et Europe - tout en reflétant la même détresse qui touche encore les femmes 80 ans plus tard. L’exposition vise à montrer les femmes non seulement comme des victimes de guerres, mais comme des individus avec leurs propres noms et identités. Pour ce projet, Strokins a réalisé de nouveaux portraits de femmes ukrainiennes résidant actuellement en Lettonie. Pour contraster temps et espace, sa sélection de photographies est en couleur. Les portraits ont été pris dans des lieux à Riga où les femmes ukrainiennes se sentaient connectées. Déplacées depuis seulement quelques années, la plupart d’entre elles se sentaient désorientées, la notion de foyer étant devenue lointaine. Ce sentiment de mélancolie, de volonté et d’espoir se retrouve dans les œuvres émouvantes de Strokins. Afin de retranscrire fidèlement les histoires et émotions des femmes dans les photos, des conversations privées ont été menées avec elles pour parler de leur expérience en Ukraine, de leur parcours vers la Lettonie, de leurs espoirs, rêves et traumatismes, en présence d’un traducteur, quelques mois avant la prise des portraits. D’autre part, les portraits de femmes de réconfort réalisés par Yajima proviennent de la série Face to Face, initialement exposée au Museum der Trostfrauen en Allemagne. De 2003 à 2006, il a vécu à la Maison du Partage en Corée du Sud, un foyer pour les femmes coréennes ayant survécu au système des « femmes de réconfort », créant cette série de portraits dans le but de relier les survivantes aux sociétés modernes, car « la violence sexualisée contre les femmes dans les zones de guerre ou de conflit se produit encore aujourd’hui, continuellement », a déclaré l’artiste. Yajima a réalisé les photos en noir et blanc avec un appareil photo Hasselblad à pellicule et un objectif de 80 mm, utilisant uniquement la lumière naturelle. Izstādē uzmanība tiek pievērsta sieviešu individuālajiem stāstiem, parādot ne tikai viņu portretus, bet arī sniedzot iespēju iepazīt personīgos stāstus viņu pašu balsī. Pretstatot korejiešu un ukraiņu izdzīvojušo pieredzi, izstādē tiek veidots dialogs starp Koreju un Ukrainu, pagātni un tagadni, izdzīvošanu un traumu. Kopš 2022. gada miljoniem sieviešu Ukrainā ir pārdzīvojušas Krievijas iebrukumu savā dzimtenē un atradušas patvērumu dažādās pasaules valstīs. Vairāki desmiti tūkstošu sieviešu ir atradušas savas jaunās mājas vai uzturēšanās vietu kara laikā Latvijā. Viņu vidū ir studentes, mātes, un dažādu jomu profesionāles. Viņām bija plāni un sapņi – iepazīt pasauli kopā armīļotajiem, veidot karjeru vai izbaudīt vienkāršas ikdienas dzīves prieku. Taču, sākoties gaisa uzlidojumiem un kara darbībai viņu dzimtenē, viss mainījās. Dzīve kļuva par cīņu par izdzīvošanu, un būt dzīvai kļuva par svētību, laikā, kad Eiropu skāra lielākais bruņotais konflikts kopš Otrā pasaules kara. Šis fakts ir viens no spilgtākajiem, kas parāda, ka sievietes un viņu ķermeņi bruņotos konfliktos bieži tiek izmantoti kā ierocis. Vārds “komforts” ir maldinošs, jo tas slēpj atkārtotas vardarbības, izvarošanas un necilvēcības tumsu. Šis jautājums bieži izraisa politiskus konfliktus starp Japānu un Koreju. Līdz šim upuri nav saņēmuši oficiālu atvainošanos, un ir palicis tikai neliels skaits izdzīvojušo sieviešu, kuras joprojām cīnās par taisnīgumu. Eiropā vai Āzijā, 20. gadsimta sākumā vai 21. gadsimtā, jaunām vai vecām – viņām kopīga ir ne tikai traumatiskā dzīves pieredze, bet arī centieni pēc taisnīguma, brīvības un miera, kā arī nesalaužamais gars turpināt cīņu. Kur ir elpa, tur ir cerība. Korejā dzīvojošā mākslinieka Jadžimas Cukasas un latviešu mākslinieka Andreja Strokina dueta izstādē līdzās balss ierakstiem būs eksponēti 10 liela izmēra fotogrāfiski portreti, kuros redzamas korejietes, kas pārdzīvojušas "komforta sieviešu" sistēmu, un ukrainietes, kas piedzīvojušas Krievijas iebrukumu Ukrainā. Izstādes intimitāte atklāj šo sieviešu personisko un traumatisko dzīves pieredzi, kas veido paralēles laikā – 20. un 21. gadsimta sākumā, un telpā – Azijā un Eiropā. Tā vienlaikus atspoguļo to, ka sievietes joprojām tiek pakļautas kara šausmām un netiek aizsargātas no dzimumā balstītas vardarbības. Izstādes mērķis ir parādīt sievietes ne tikai kā karu upurus, bet arī kā personības ar saviem vārdiem, identitāti un spēku.Šim projektam pēc mūsu ierosinājuma Andrejs Strokins ir radījis jaunus Ukrainas sieviešu, kas dzīvo Latvijā, portretus. Lai izceltu kontrastu starp laiku un telpu, viņa fotogrāfijas ir krāsainas. Portreti uzņemti tādās Rīgas vietās, kuras ukraiņu sievietes izjūt kā sev personīgi nozīmīgas. Būdamas pārvietotas tikai pēdējo pāris gadu laikā, lielākā daļa no šīm sievietēm jūtas dezorientētas – doma par mājām kļuvusi par tālu un nesasniedzamu jēdzienu. Šī melanholijas, gribas un cerības sajūta ir iemūžināta Strokina emocionālajos darbos. Lai fotogrāfijās autentiski atspoguļotu sieviešu stāstus un emocijas, dažus mēnešus pirms portretu uzņemšanas ar viņām tika rīkotas privātas sarunas, klātesot izstādes veidotājiem. Šajās sarunās sievietes dalījās savā pieredzē Ukrainā, stāstīja par ceļojumu uz Latviju, kā arī par savām cerībām, sapņiem un traumām.Savukārt fotogrāfa Jadžimas Cukasas veidotie komforta sieviešu portreti ir no sērijas “Acs pret aci” (“Face to Face”), kas sākotnēji tika izstādīti Komforta sieviešu muzejā (Museum der Trostfrauen) Vācijā. No 2003. līdz 2006. gadam Cukasa dzīvoja Dalīšanās namā (House of Sharing) Dienvidkorejā – mājā, kurā mitinājās korejietes, kas pārcietušas “komforta sieviešu” sistēmas ciešanas. Portretu sēriju mākslinieks veidoja ar mērķi savienot izdzīvojušās sievietes ar mūsdienu sabiedrību. Kā viņš pats teica: “Seksualizēta vardarbība pret sievietēm kara vai konfliktu zonās notiek arī mūsdienās, nepārtraukti”. Jadžima Cukasa uzņēma melnbaltos fotoattēlus ar Hasselblad filmu kameru ar 80 mm objektīvu, izmantojot tikai dabisko gaismu. Nelielā noliktavas telpā Aprūpes namā (House of Sharing) Seulā viņš izveidoja improvizētu tumšo istabu, kur pats attīstīja filmas un veidoja izdrukas. “Četri no rīta 2022. gada 24. februārī, Harkivā. Pilzer). Izstādes kuratore ir Kendija Čoja (Candy Choi) un konsultante Inete Ielīte. Izstādi veidojusi organizācija "Young Blood Initiative", kurai asistēja Krista Džoškuna un Džimena Mendizabala del Morala (Jimena Mendizábal del Moral). Виставка побудована як діалог між досвідом корейських жінок, які потрапили до військового сексуального рабства під час японського вторгнення 1930-1945 років (також відомих як «жінки для втіхи»), та сучасним досвідом українських жінок, які продовжують чинити опір вторгненню в їхню країну. Слово «숨(Suum)» - це корейський термін, що означає «дихати» або «давати життя». Назва фільму «Подих. Дихання. Suum. складається з «дихання» англійською, латиською, корейською та українською мовами і символізує згасаюче дихання вцілілих утішительок та історії українок, які покинули свою країну в пошуках місця, де вони зможуть вільно дихати. А там, де є дихання, є надія. «Я не вільна, поки будь-яка жінка не вільна, навіть якщо її кайдани дуже відрізняються від моїх» - Одрі ЛордДихання. Дихання. Suum. фіксує та відображає травму та біль, надії та мрії, боротьбу та рішучість, відчай та оптимізм 11 жінок через портрети та аудіозаписи. Починаючи з 2022 року, велика кі6-28 лютого 2025 рокулькість жінок з України пережили частину російського вторгнення на своїй батьківщині і знайшли притулок по всьому світу, деякі з них назвали Латвію своїм новим домом. Дехто з них - нещодавні випускниці, дехто - матері або карʼєристки . У них були плани і мрії досліджувати світ зі своїми коханими . Вони насолоджувалися своїм простим повсякденним життям. Але коли впали бомби, все це зникло. Життя - це виживання, бути живим - це благословення, коли вибухнув найбільший конфлікт в Європі з часів Другої світової війни. Напередодні та під час Другої світової війни на іншому кінці світу з'явився термін «жінки для утіхи». Ці жінки були жертвами системи військового сексуального рабства, яку створили, експлуатували та розширювали японські імператорські збройні сили з 1930-х років до кінця Другої світової війни. Вона підкреслює той факт, що жіночі тіла часто стають мішенню і використовуються як зброя у збройних конфліктах. Слово «комфорт» вводить в оману, оскільки маскує темряву і нелюдськість повторюваного насильства і зґвалтувань. Це питання часто стає спусковим гачком політичних конфліктів між Японією та Кореєю. На сьогоднішній день жертви не отримали офіційних вибачень, залишилась лише невелика кількість вцілілих жінок, які все ще борються за справедливість. Європа чи Азія, початок 20-го століття чи 21-е, молоді чи старі, їх об'єднує не лише травматичний життєвий досвід, але й прагнення до справедливості, свободи та миру, а також сила духу продовжувати боротьбу. Андрейс Строкінс Андрейс Строкінс (нар. 1984) - латвійський фотограф, живе і працює в Ризі. Він працює з документальними фотопроектами, а також з народними зображеннями та віднайденими архівами. Окрім власних проектів, Строкінс працює як фотограф-фрілансер, здебільшого займається репортажною та портретною зйомкою, а також виконує редакційні завдання. Ядзіма Цукаса Народився в Такасакі, Японія, Ядзіма вивчав історію в Університеті Васеда та фотографію в Ніппонському інституті фотографії в Токіо. З 2003 по 2006 рік він жив у Будинку обміну в Південній Кореї, притулку для корейських жінок, які пережили випробування системи «жінок для втіхи», і працював над фотопроектом «Віч-на-віч». Його фотороботи виставлялися в Німеччині, Японії, Південній Кореї та Тайвані. В рамках дуетної виставки корейського фотографа Ядзіми Цукаси та латвійського Андрейса Строкінса буде представлено 10 масштабних фотопортретів корейських жінок, що вижили, а також українських жінок, які пережили війну, разом із записами їхніх розповідей. Ці інтимні роботи розповідають про їхній особистий і, часом, травматичний життєвий досвід, проводячи паралель у часі - початок 20-го і 21-го століття, і просторі - Східна Азія і Європа, відображаючи при цьому ту ж саму долю, яка впливає на жінок і через 80 років після війни. Виставка має на меті показати жінок не лише як жертв воєн , але й як особистостей з власними іменами та ідентичностями. Для цього проекту Строкінс створив свіжі портрети українських жінок, які зараз проживають у Латвії. Щоб контрастувати час і простір, він вибрав кольорові фотографії. Портрети були зроблені в тих місцях Риги, з якими українки відчували свій зв'язок. Переміщені лише за останні кілька років, більшість з них відчували себе дезорієнтованими, ідея дому стала далеким поняттям. Це, відчуття меланхолії, волі та надії було інкапсульовано в емоційних роботах Строкінса . Щоб правильно передати історії та емоції жінок на фотографіях, за кілька місяців до зйомки портретів ,&nbsp; були проведені приватні бесіди з ними про їхній досвід в Україні, подорож до Латвії, їхні надії, мрії та травми в присутності перекладача. З іншого боку, портрети жінок для утіхи, зроблені Ядзімою , належать до серії «Віч-на-віч» , яка спочатку експонувалася в Музеї тростини в Німеччині. З 2003 по 2006 рік він жив у Будинку обміну в Південній Кореї, будинку для корейських жінок, які пережили випробування системи «жінок для втіхи», і створив цю серію портретів з метою пов'язати тих, хто вижив, із сучасним суспільством, адже «сексуалізоване насильство над жінками на війні або в зонах конфлікту відбувається навіть сьогодні, безперервно», - каже художник. Ядзіма зняв чорно-білі фотографії на плівкову камеру Hasselblad з 80-міліметровим об'єктивом, використовуючи лише природне світло. Він переобладнав невелику комору в темну кімнату в Будинку спільного проживання, де проявляв плівки і робив відбитки. "Четверта ранку 24 лютого 2022 року. Харків.
